SHF Teams Up with The Athlete Health Organization to Educate Student Athletes

Philadelphia, PA - The Athlete Health Organization (AHO) and the Student Health Force join forces on Saturday, June 2, 2012 to screen and educate student athletes. The 8th Annual Philadelphia Health Screening Event is Saturday, June 2, 2012 at Temple's Liacourias Center - 1776 North Broad Street, Philadelphia, PA 19121 - from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Student athletes are invited to get completely screened for sports and receive education about healthy choices for life - all for free. Student athlete physicals include electrocardiograms, ECG, and, if needed, echocardiograms.

AHO together with its partners strives to ensure that every student - athlete receives the best possible health screening through:

- Detection - Thorough medical examinations reveal health issues that often go unnoticed with standard physicals - or worse still, no checkups at all.

- Prevention - The AHO has caught numerous severe, underlying conditions in youth athletes that if left untreated could have proved disastrous on the playing field.

- Education - Medical volunteers provide guidance for maintaining healthy lifestyles, as well as preventing and caring for injuries and other conditions.

The goal of the Philadelphia Health Screening Event is to effectively screen and educate student athletes in order to prevent health related events today and in the future. In addition to receiving free comprehensive physicals this Saturday, students will be enrolled in Student Health Force, a health education movement shown to be effective in transforming students into "health champions" as they become a force for health in their community. The Student Health Force movement offers online and hands-on programs to create a healthier generation by helping students to learn how to make healthier choices, choose to live healthier lifestyles, and share healthy behaviors with their community. Sign up for the Philadelphia Health Screening Event at www.athletehealth.org.Walkins are available to the first 500 students between 8:00 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 2nd.

"The annual Philadelphia Health Screening Event ensures that our students are in good health and ready to participate in sports," said David Shipon M.D. F.A.C.C., preventive cardiologist at The Heart Center of Philadelphia and CEO of The Athlete Health Organization. "Beyond the event's detection and prevention activities, we are now able to advance our education capabilities. We will be able to be a part of the students' health and health maintenance throughout the year with our partnership with Student Health Force and its online resources and tracker. We look forward working together to find ways to further advance the health of our community."

Robert Gillio, M.D., president and CEO of InnerLink designed Student Health Force to address the critical health challenges facing our children. "I hope that students and their families take advantage of the opportunity provided through the event on Saturday; we are excited to be part of such an important health screening event," said Gillio. "Our program, Student Health Force, ties in well with the goal of AHO to screen and then educate students. Receiving accolades in Chicago, Student Health Force has motivated students to stay in school, take better care of themselves and their loved ones, and learn critical skills to maintain a healthy life well into the future."
